Taekwondo Council UK is committed to supporting the development of safe, knowledgeable and capable instructors at every stage of their journey.
Whether you are taking your first steps into leadership through the Cadet programme, working towards an instructor qualification, or seeking recognition of existing qualifications and experience, TCUK provides a clear and structured pathway to support your development. This page contains information, guidance and downloadable resources relating to instructor development, qualifications, membership pathways and recognition within TCUK.
Junior Leadership
The Cadet (Junior Leader) programme provides younger members with an introduction to leadership, responsibility and instructor development. Cadets assist with class activities, support participant learning and develop communication and leadership skills under the supervision of a recognised instructor.
Level 1 Qualification
The Assistant Instructor Qualification is the first formal qualification within the TCUK instructor pathway. It prepares individuals to assist with the safe delivery of Taekwondo activities while developing instructional competence, communication skills and practical coaching experience.
Candidates must complete the required learning programme and a minimum of 10 hours supervised teaching experience verified by a recognised TCUK Platinum Member.
Principal Qualification
The Instructor Qualification is the principal TCUK instructor qualification. It prepares individuals to plan, deliver and manage Taekwondo programmes while promoting participant welfare, safeguarding, inclusion and safe practice.
Candidates must complete the required learning programme and demonstrate a minimum of 12 months active instructional experience supported by verification from a recognised TCUK Platinum Member.
Recognition of Prior Learning
TCUK recognises that many instructors and coaches have gained qualifications, experience and professional learning through other organisations, governing bodies, associations, federations and independent providers.
Applications may be made for recognition of external qualifications, organisation qualifications or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Recognition decisions are based upon evidence of competence, safe practice and relevant experience.
Membership
Membership categories support different roles within the TCUK community and are linked to qualifications, deployment status and insurance requirements.
| Membership | Typical Role |
|---|---|
| Student | Participant |
| Bronze | Associated Member |
| Silver | Recognised Coach / Instructor |
| Gold | Assistant Instructor |
| Platinum | Club Instructor |
Governance & Standards
The following frameworks establish the standards, requirements and pathways that support instructor development, qualification achievement, membership categories and recognition processes within TCUK.
If you are unsure which pathway, qualification, recognition route or membership category applies to you, please contact TCUK.
I joined the ITC originally in 2019 and have had the pleasure of watching it grow into what is now the TCUK. I have had nothing but support and encouragement. At a time where I was learning how to be a completely new and independent association, TCUK offered me a massive life line, especially for policies and ensuring I had all the paperwork necessary in place. They are easy to contact and talk to about any issues or problems and always go the extra mile.
I am very proud to say I am a member of the TCUK and recognise them as our NGB.
