Recognising Achievement, Service and Contribution
Taekwondo Council UK (TCUK) recognises that Taekwondo is practised through a variety of established organisations, traditions and technical systems.
TCUK provides a framework for the recognition of existing Dan (Degree) grades, the recognition of black belt seniority and the award of senior Dan grades in accordance with the TCUK Dan (Degree) Grade Recognition, Seniority and Promotion Policy.
Before submitting an application, please read the full policy document.
TCUK may recognise Dan grades awarded by legitimate Taekwondo organisations.
Applications should be submitted by email together with copies of certificates and any supporting documentation relevant to the grade being recognised.
Applications are reviewed by TCUK and assessed on the evidence provided.
Where recognition is approved, a TCUK Recognition Certificate will be issued confirming the recognised Dan grade within Taekwondo Council UK.
TCUK may recognise senior Dan grades awarded by other legitimate Taekwondo organisations.
Applications should be submitted by email together with copies of certificates and supporting documentation relevant to the application.
Applications are considered by an Independent Recognition Panel consisting of:
Where recognition is approved, a TCUK Recognition Certificate will be issued confirming the recognised Dan grade within Taekwondo Council UK.
For the purpose of determining seniority and experience, TCUK recognises the date of a practitioner's first Dan (1st Degree Black Belt) as the beginning of their black belt career.
TCUK recognises that grading structures and promotion timelines have varied between organisations throughout the development of Taekwondo. Variations in promotion history do not automatically invalidate a practitioner's seniority or experience.
Further information can be found within the Dan (Degree) Grade Recognition, Seniority and Promotion Policy.
TCUK may award senior Dan grades where there is sufficient evidence of dedication, leadership, service and contribution to the development of Taekwondo.
Senior Dan Awards are not based upon the completion of a grading syllabus or technical examination. They are awarded in recognition of an individual's contribution to the art of Taekwondo and the wider Taekwondo community.
Applications or nominations should be submitted by email together with supporting evidence demonstrating the applicant's contribution to Taekwondo.
All applications are considered by an Independent Senior Dan Panel consisting of:
Where approved, a TCUK Award Certificate will be issued confirming the Dan grade awarded.
To ensure applications receive appropriate consideration and review, Senior Dan Recognition and Senior Dan Award applications are considered within two annual review cycles.
Applications received between 1 July and 31 December will be reviewed during January.
Applications received between 1 January and 30 June will be reviewed during July.
Applications received after the closing date for a review cycle will be carried forward to the next review period.

I joined the ITC originally in 2019 and have had the pleasure of watching it grow into what is now the TCUK. I have had nothing but support and encouragement. At a time where I was learning how to be a completely new and independent association, TCUK offered me a massive life line, especially for policies and ensuring I had all the paperwork necessary in place. They are easy to contact and talk to about any issues or problems and always go the extra mile.
I am very proud to say I am a member of the TCUK and recognise them as our NGB.
